It is often said that the “devil” is in the details….in this case it is the definition, however that is great news for cider fans. The Library of Parliament has recently prepared a paper on the IILA legislation that also includes the legislative definition of wine for the purposes of the act. While the full definition is quite lengthy (I would be happy to provide it on request) the short versions is that following products are considered to be “wine” under the definition of the Importation of Intoxicating Liquors Act…. Cider, hard lemonade and wine coolers. Although I am not significantly familiar with the cider industry I have heard from a number of cider fans all across Canada and I gather this news will be welcomed by the cider industry as much as it will be by cider consumers.
